Counselor's Corner

The SISD Counseling and Guidance department offers a comprehensive, developmental program that addresses the academic, career, and social/emotional needs of all students through guidance curriculum, responsive services, individual planning, and system support.  By advocacy, leadership, and collaboration, SISD certified school counselors assist and encourage students to maximize their capabilities and academic achievement.  In partnership with our stakeholders, Sharyland ISD counselors empower all students to be prepared for the future; and have access to the knowledge and skills necessary to reach their own self-actualization.

The guidance and counseling department at
Donna Wernecke Elementary school is focused on helping our students learn the necessary skills to become responsible, successful learners. We provide a supportive and caring environment by utilizing a developmental guidance program.

The program is designed to be preventive and developmental, and is based on the priority needs of our students.

We offer a variety of counseling services, as outlined by the Texas Developmental Guidance and Counseling Program Model. Among the services,we will be providing are individual counseling, group counseling, and classroom guidance lessons.

  • Individual Counseling- Students can request to see us by filling out a counselor referral form located in the office or by asking their teacher for one. This is a process where a student can discuss issues in a safe, positive, and confidential setting. Topics are based on the needs of the student and may include: feelings, peer pressure, relationships, stress, social skills, academics, bullying, getting along with others, problem-solving, and decision-making.
  • Small Group Counseling- A process where students, sharing similar issues and concerns, work together in a small group environment. Topics are based on the needs of the students and may include divorce or changing families, grief and loss, friendship and social skills, study skills, conflict resolution, anger management, self-esteem, and stress-management.
  • Classroom Guidance/Classroom Counseling- These guidance lessons are provided in a monthly basis. Counselor implements the CKH Character based curriculum to address personal, social, academic, and career-related needs at the child's developmental level. Topics may include self-esteem, conflict resolution, study skills, anger management, career awareness, tattling/reporting, friendship/social skills, responsibility, respect, teasing/bullying, feelings, cooperation, goal setting/decision-making, and peer pressure.

By addressing the intellectual and emotional needs of students, it is our hope that each child will have a rewarding school experience.
